Fratelli d’Italia group leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Tommaso Foti, is the new Minister of European Affairs. The decision, which had been expected for days, was confirmed by government sources this morning by Raffaele Fitto’s successor.
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, signed, at the proposal of the Prime Minister, Hon. Giorgia Meloni, the decree appointing Hon. Tommaso Foti as Minister without portfolio.
Immediately afterwards, the new Minister was sworn in by President Mattarella in the presence, as witnesses, of the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, Dr. Ugo Zampetti, and the Military Advisor to the President of the Republic, General Gianni Candotti.
The Prime Minister, Hon. Giorgia Meloni, and the Undersecretary of State to the Prime Minister, Hon. Alfredo Mantovano, were present.
Tommaso Foti, a leading figure of the Italian right and a pillar of Fratelli d’Italia, has been able to combine a firm approach with a dialogue strategy towards the European institutions, proving to be a reliable and prepared interlocutor.
A former FdI group leader in the Chamber, Foti distinguished himself for his ability to coordinate the parliamentary group’s demands with a pragmatic and results-oriented vision.
The deputy will take over the delegations that were Raffaele Fitto’s, for European Affairs, Cohesion Policies, the South and the Pnrr.
His appointment is a choice of continuity, compared to Fitto’s work, which confirms Giorgia Meloni’s clear vision, that is, the defence of Italian interests without compromise, but with the awareness that a constructive strategy with Brussels is fundamental for the future of the nation.
A crucial moment for Italy in Europe, with significant challenges related to the NRP, the management of migration policies and Italy’s role in defining the Union’s new priorities. The objective of the new minister will be to consolidate the Italian position, strengthening the country’s voice on issues such as the protection of national interests and respect for the sovereignty of member states.
Giorgia Meloni: ‘Foti a politician of great ability’
Tommaso is a politician of great experience and ability, among the best resources Fratelli d’Italia has today‘. This is how Premier Giorgia Meloni comments on the appointment of Tommaso Foti as minister to replace Raffaele Fitto. ‘He has a long parliamentary career behind him and, as group leader, has been able to demonstrate his value and competence in this legislature, leading the main majority party in Montecitorio,’ Meloni added. “The most heartfelt congratulations, mine personally and those of the entire government,” after being sworn in as minister. “He is a militant, passionate and consistent, who has dedicated his life to the service of his community and the nation from a very young age. Minister Foti picks up the baton from Raffaele Fitto, the new Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and I am certain that he will know how to work with the same determination and thoroughness. For the good of Italy and the Italians,’ the Prime Minister concluded.
With Tommaso Foti at the helm of the Ministry of European Affairs, Italy is preparing to strengthen its position in Brussels, relying on competence, firmness and a renewed sense of European belonging.
Antonio Maria Gabellone is taking Raffaele Fitto’s place as deputy. The Chamber has in fact taken note of the letter sent to Montecitorio with which Fitto resigned to take up the post of executive vice-president in the European Commission.
