Vasile Costiuc holds a degree in History from the Chisinau State Pedagogical University “Ion Creangă”. He worked as a journalist for the Jurnal of Chisinau until 2010. In 2011, he became the president of Democrația Acasă (Democracy Home party). DA managed to enter the Moldovan parliament and won 6 deputies in the September 28 general elections. After Maia Sandu’s party tried to invalidate its participation in the elections, the Electoral Commission approved DA results, but the final decision will be taken by the Constitutional Court on October 16.
In the 9th, 10th and 11th grade history books of the Russian Federation, under the authorship of Vladimir Medinski, Moldova is described as a historically Russian territory. What is your opinion on this matter?
I definitely don’t agree with this deceiving propaganda. Moldova was Romanian land for centuries, as a Principality. What really happen was that, in 1812, after the Ottoman-Russian war, the Tsarist Empire annexed the eastern part of Moldova, creating the Bessarabia Governorate. But, more than a century later, in March 1918, the people of Bessarabia voted to unite with Romanian Kingdom, which marked the event known as “Great Union” („Marea Unire”, in Romanian language).
Unfortunately for our Romanian nation, in 1940, due to the infamous Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, Moldova was once again forcibly separated from Romania, by threats, and handed over to the Soviet Union. Moldova is not Russian territory, but Romanian.
Your party advocates the Union of Romania and Moldova, which would imply the entry of Moldova into the EU and NATO, yet you have been branded as pro-Russian, how is this possible?
This label, ‘pro-Russian’, is applied by the leftists to many political leaders at the European level and not only. It has nothing to do with the truth. It is merely a method used to smear and exclude voices that are inconvenient for globalist governments. I support Moldova’s accession to NATO and the EU, but I prefer to be objective and tell my compatriots the truth: at the moment, the easiest and most effective way for us to become part of these European structures is by uniting with Romania.
Your party is accused of promoting itself in the elections through 17 fake Tik Tok accounts.
These accusations are part of the globalist establishment’s rhetoric. The Democracy Home Party ran a serious, clean campaign, which was indeed actively conducted online, but without using techniques prohibited by our legislation. Moreover, as seen in the election results, we are a party that many Moldovans have entrusted with a mandate of confidence. But to better understand the situation. These accusations do not come directly from the institutions of the Republic of Moldova but are based on a report made by an NGO from Romania (whose leadership has high-level connections in the Republic of Moldova) that was made public in the middle of the electoral campaign. And the authorities did not classify this as foreign interference, as they did about George Simion’s statement from the Friday before the elections.
Are our authorities so incompetent that they could not conduct an investigation and are reporting relying on the work of an NGO from another country? What authority does that NGO have in the Republic of Moldova?
Moreover, the fact that the ruling party made the complaint based on this report, in the middle of the election day, when they received signals that we could cross the electoral threshold, does not seem strange to you? Otherwise, if there had been indisputable evidence that something was wrong with the DA party, would have removed it from the race 2-3 days before September 28, as they did with other electoral competitors.
The other accusation concerns the support of George Simion.
There is no problem whatsoever with the support George Simion has given me. Maia Sandu received a much bigger support from Romanian president Nicușor Dan, and I haven’t seen any complaints about that.
It’s important for everyone to have strong, ideologically aligned partners in other countries. George Simion is the president of the most important political party in today’s Romania. Last July, we travelled together to the United States of America, as part of a bigger delegation, where we were received by CPAC President Matthew Schlapp. We had numerous other meetings with representatives of the MAGA movement. AUR party also attended MEGA event in Chișinău, event during which I was invited to deliver a speech.
Speaking of the MEGA event. Brian Brown was not allowed to enter Moldova because he was considered a threat to national security, like George Simion, and the next day, without any explanation, he was allowed to enter the country. Who decides to lightly put and remove the label “national threat”?
Unfortunately, Maia Sandu and her government have turned the Moldovan state security structures into a political weapon used against her political adversaries. This is what happened with some of the foreign guests at MEGA event. It seems that Maia Sandu and her party decide who is a “national threat” and who isn’t, depending strictly on political interests and affiliations. What happened with Brian Brown, American citizen, was a disgrace. On Sunday evening he was banned from entering Moldova, he was kept inside the airport for more than 12 hours and, at the end, he was allowed in Chișinău. A very absurd and shameful situation for Moldova.
Couple of days ago, the Electoral Commission validated all the mandates, including your party’ones. What’s next?
According to our legislation, the final decision rests with the Constitutional Court, which must rule within 10 days. We don’t have any real reason for not being optimistic. Moldovan citizens voted for us to represent them in the Parliament. We won six mandates and should be validated by the Constitutional Court. There is no legal basis for it to override the will of the citizens of Moldova… except for a huge abuse similar to what happened in Romania last year.
